We give you back control over your data

Your most personal memories shouldn't be readable by the company that stores them, let alone sold, scanned, or handed over.

zeitkapsl encrypts every photo and video on your device before it's uploaded. We can't see what's inside.

Why we started all of this

The big cloud services make a tempting promise: never lose a photo because your phone broke, share with family in a tap, your whole library on every device.

The price is handing your most personal moments to companies whose business is built on exploiting data. For us, that was never a deal worth making.

We tried self-hosting. For years. It gave us control, but it came with endless maintenance, and it was only an option for experts, not for our families or friends. And certainly not for the average hard working mom and dad who just want to keep their precious memories safe.

At the same time, we kept searching for a solution that combined privacy, ease of use, and European values, like the right to privacy and data protection. Sadly, nothing came even close.

That’s when we said: then let’s build it ourselves.

Our mission 🎯

Private photo storage should be the normal choice, not the expert one.

Keeping photos truly private used to mean running your own server and maintaining it forever. We did that for years. zeitkapsl is the alternative we wanted and couldn’t find: as easy as Google Photos, fully end-to-end encrypted.

Every photo is encrypted on your device before it leaves it. We store the data, you hold the key, and no one at zeitkapsl can open your library.

Photos aren’t just files. They’re the closest thing you have to a record of your life, and once they leak you can’t take them back. That’s the bar we hold ourselves to, in every decision:

We protect the user 🔐

Privacy isn’t a feature we bolted on. It’s the test every decision has to pass: does this protect the person using it? When the private way and the easy way conflict, we ship the private one and do the work to make it easy. Our encryption is independently audited and our apps are open source, so you don’t have to take our word for it.

We answer to European law 🇪🇺

Where a company is based decides which laws govern your data and which governments can compel access to it. zeitkapsl is a company registered in Vienna, owned by the people who work on it, running on servers in the EU. There is no parent company in another country, so your data can’t be reached through laws like the US CLOUD Act, only through European courts, under European data protection law.

We hold the rest of our stack to the same standard. We keep the list of outside services we depend on short, and within the same legal framework wherever we can. We’re not fully there yet, and sometimes closing a gap means building the tool ourselves, like our internal CRM and support stack.

We’re independent 🤘

zeitkapsl takes no outside investment and is built to pay for itself through subscriptions alone. That means no second revenue stream in your data, and no acquisition that quietly rewrites the terms you agreed to. We grow more slowly this way, but steadily.

We keep our footprint small 🌱

Every line of code and every server costs energy and materials. So the apps stay light enough for a phone that’s several years old, and nobody has to buy new hardware to keep their memories safe. Our servers run on 100% renewable energy, and because our software asks little of them, we don’t need many.

    Peter Spiess-Knafl (cinemast)

    Co-Founder

Peter built the technical foundation of zeitkapsl and the encryption that keeps your photos private. He keeps everything that runs the service online and still writes a good part of the code across all the apps. He keeps zeitkapsl headed the right way, but don’t be surprised if he’s also the one answering your support email late at night.

For years my photos lived on external drives while I worked through one self-hosting setup after another. The data stayed private, but it took constant upkeep. With zeitkapsl I want privacy to be something everyone gets, not just people who enjoy digging through config files.

    Fullstack engineer & research

Simeon joined zeitkapsl through a research project in autumn 2024. These days he does much more, working across all our apps as a fullstack engineer, from the encryption at the core to the features that let you search your photos and find the people, places, and things in them.

I’ve always wanted to de-Google my life as much as possible. Joining zeitkapsl means I can finally work on something that aligns with that goal. Here, I’m not just contributing to a product, but to a vision of digital freedom and privacy that I truly believe in.

The people who built zeitkapsl

Many hands built zeitkapsl. These people shaped it into what it is today.

Oliver co-founded zeitkapsl and built the website you use to view and organize your photos in the browser. He also handled the paperwork for our first public research grant. Now a father of three, he has stepped back from day-to-day work but stays close to the project.

Miruna built the very first versions of zeitkapsl: the desktop app, the tool that moves your library over from Google Photos, and the first Android app. Much of that early work is still part of zeitkapsl today. She lives in Barcelona, with the occasional stop in Vienna.

    Raphi

    Chief Entropy Generator · RIP

Raphi was our full-time agent of chaos. No keyboard stayed hair-free, no meeting went uninterrupted. Inspired by the famous Proof-of-Cat paper, his contribution was high-quality randomness, mostly in the form of unexpected paw-presses. He is dearly missed.

Our journey so far

90 Seconds Idea Competition

The idea came in 2019. It wasn't until 2023 that we decided to bring it to life. In a 90-second pitch, we convinced the jury and secured 2nd place.

Prototype

We managed to design a prototype that met our standards for security, privacy, and robustness, proving the feasibility of the idea.

First funding

The Build! Startup Center accepted us into its program, our first funding. Another grant from AplusB followed right away, and a follow-up round in 2024 kept us going.

Public Beta

After a private alpha with friends and family, we opened an invite-only beta and released the apps for iOS and Android. A huge milestone for us.

We are live

We got rid of the invite codes and took all courage together and announced our launch on r/BuyFromEU. The response was overwhelimng for us.

Open-Source

All zeitkapsl apps are Open-Source and available on Codeberg under GPLv3.

2,400,000 memories

Safely protected by zeitkapsl, up from our first million just three months earlier.

Audit completed

zeitkapsl has been audited by PWND Labs. The full audit report is publicly available.

What comes next

Our roadmap is public. We can't build every request, but the votes on it strongly guide what we work on next.
