Installing zeitkapsl
iOS
Download and install from the Apple App Store and login using your e-mail and password and optionally your second factor.
Requested permissions
After installation, the application will request permission to send notifications and access your media. To ensure full functionality, grant all requested permissions.
- Notifications: optional, enable it if you want to use the on this day feature.
- Media access: optional, enable it if you want to upload media items from this device.
WARNING
The app also works with limited media access, but automatic backup won't work.
You will also be asked to enable automatic backup. For the best experience and to ensure your media is consistently protected, it is recommended to accept this option.
If you don't enable automatic backup, you can select the items you want to back up manually on the media grid and tap Upload in the action bar.
All settings can be adjusted at any time in the settings menu.

Desktop
With the desktop application you can quickly import your photo library from external disks or your computer and also keep a full local backup of all your zeitkapsl data.
Download the Desktop Application from our official download and follow the installation procedure.

- Linux: Download Flatpak/DEB/RPM/PKG
Once installed launch the zeitkapsl app. After successful login, you have the following options.
Backup a local directory
- Select one or more local directories you want to upload to zeitkapsl
- Click
Backupand follow the upload progress - Items that could not be uploaded, you can check the reason by clicking on the little red cross (❌)
Photos and Videos are checked for duplicates automatically. If they appear in more than one folder, they are uploaded only once and then linked to multiple albums
Export from zeitkapsl to a local directory
To keep a complete local copy of your library, use the Download tab. See Download photos and videos for the steps and export structure.
Google Takeout
Here you can import existing Google Photos Takeouts, for details see migrate from google photos
Settings
There you see information about your storage usage, the logged in account, and you can select whether you want to upload photos and videos or just one of them.
WARNING
If you disable photos and videos in the settings, nothing will be uploaded to zeitkapsl and backup won't work

Yes! Really, we provide a cli for terminal lovers and home-server owners. Download the cli from our official download. For times when you prefer to run zeitkapsl from the command line or on your server.
Make sure you have ffmpeg and vipsthumbnail installed.
Windows:

Checking your setup
Run zeitkapsl-cli doctor to verify your installation. It checks your CLI version, OS, available disk space, connectivity to the zeitkapsl API, and that ffmpeg/ffprobe are installed with the codecs needed for video processing, useful when something isn't working and you want to see what's missing before opening a support request.
